Participatory videos

Participatory video (VP) is a tool from the Participatory Action Research methodology (PAR) that promotes practices and relations in order to identify community needs or social problems (De Lange, 2012). It is used for various purposes such as promoting deep participation in communities or in social groups, promoting greater agency in decision-making processes and producing collective action for social change.

White defines VP as a powerful tool for "putting the individual in relation to his/her community, for being aware of his/her needs and those of the group, and for generating critical awareness. It has the potential to bring about personal, social, political and cultural changes (White, 2003: 64).

Thus, participatory video seeks to involve a group of people or a community in the design and creation of their own film, and in it they can shape the themes according to their own vision of priorities and they control how they will be represented. It allows the collective to take measures to solve their problems and / or to communicate their needs and ideas to decision-makers or other groups and communities. That is, the VP offers the opportunity to citizens to tell their own stories and to share experiences, values and behaviours that seek a more sustainable development.

  • It strengthens both horizontal communication (i.e. with other communities or social groups) and vertical communication (i.e. with those who make political decisions).
  • It strengthens the empowerment of the participants by promoting the control of their own audiovisual representation and the ability to create and manage it.
